چکیده

Northamptonshire is classified as a radon affected area, with greater than 1 per cent of domestic dwellings being above the UK Action Level of 200Bq m–3. Workplace radon is also a health risk in Northamptonshire, with a significant number of premises being predicted to be above this Action Level (400Bq m–3). After an extensive survey in National Health Service premises, using track etch detectors and real time monitoring systems, it was found that certain staff were receiving very high doses – up to around 20mSv. The annual collective dose from radon, in the rooms with elevated levels, was 285mSv, an average of 4.45mSv. After remediation of the rooms the average dose fell to 0.5mSv. The average cost of radon remediation in National Health Service premises was £3,950 per location. This compares to a value of £1,953 for locations in schools in Northamptonshire. It is possible that remediation costs for the majority of small to medium enterprises in the country will, on our conservative estimate of 6 per cent being above the Action Level, be in the region of £1,460,000. Further monitoring of workplace radon is taking place across the county in an attempt to determine more accurately the full extent of the problem. Introduction

A Comparative Review of the Effectiveness of Radon Remediation Programmes in Hospitals, Schools and Homes in Northamptonshire, UK

INTRODUCTION Naturally occurring radon gas has been shown to cause increased numbers of lung cancers in miners when present at high levels in underground workings (1). Radon has a variable geological distribution across the UK with some counties having elevated levels in the built environment. Radon, due primarily to the stack effect, concentrates inside buildings. Interpolation of the miners d...

Cost-effectiveness and Health Benefits of Domestic Radon Remediation Programmes - An Update

Abstract. The cost of remedial work and the radon level reduction achieved in a series of domestic properties in Northamptonshire have been the subject of study by our group for some years, as Northamptonshire was declared as a Radon Affected Area in 1992. Previous analysis, which relied on estimations of the total number of affected houses extrapolated from National Radiological Protection Boa...

A cost-effectiveness analysis of radon protection methods in domestic properties: a comparative case study in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, UK.

Building regulations in the UK have since 1992 required that radon-proof membranes be installed in new domestic properties to protect residents against the adverse effects of radon. This study compares the cost-effectiveness of the current regulatory regime with an alternative that would entail new properties being tested for radon after construction, and being remediated if necessary. The alte...

The cost-effectiveness of radon-proof membranes in new homes: a case study from Brixworth, Northamptonshire, UK.

Installing radon-proof membranes in new homes can reduce the exposure of those living in the properties to the radiation caused by a build up of radon gas. This paper considers whether doing so is cost-effective for a group of new houses constructed in the village of Brixworth, Northamptonshire, UK. The measure of cost-effectiveness used is cost per quality-adjusted life-year gained. Brixworth ...

A new methodology for cost-effectiveness studies of domestic radon remediation programmes: quality-adjusted life-years gained within primary care trusts in central England.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, high levels of which are associated with geological formations such as those found in Northamptonshire and North Oxfordshire in the UK. The UK's National Radiological Protection Board have designated both districts as radon Affected Areas. Radiation levels due to radon, therefore, exceed 200 Bq m(-3), the UK's domestic Action Level, in over one pe...
